I am thinking about making a pvc pipe feeder. I've been reading on here how people do it. And I've decided to use 3" pvc pipe with a 45 elbow attached to a vertical and horizonal pipe. I am going to use a 45 elbow because people have stated on here many times that if you use a 90 elbow then the food binds up easier. The vertical pipe will be 4' tall & the horizonal peice will be 2'. The horizonal pipe that the food flows out of I was going to cut 4 holes 2" so that my chickens can just stick their heads in to get food. What do you guys think about this design?

My husband built something like that for our Australorps and it works great. They stopped eating out of their other feeder once they discovered that one. It doesn't work with the smaller chickens, though, because they step in the big holes and kick the food out or get all the way down in the pipe. (He used a 3" pipe.) As long as it's for large breed chickens it should work great.

I built one last weekend just like you are describing. It works great! I used galvanized strapping and attached it to the side of my coop. I have the feeder portion about 3" off the ground and have not had any issues with ants.
