Got two Coturnix quail hens and the past two nights they have been really upset.

They're kept indoors and they can't see the window. For the first time they've started chucking themselves at the roof.

I'm getting really distressed by it, as are they, and don't know how to help them.

I've put a cloth over their cage the past couple of nights. It's helping in the evening but in the morning theu are just throwing themselves around .

It's really upsetting

Try giving them more hiding spots so they feel safer and have a place to get away from "danger". Baskets, cardboard boxes, or potted plants can all serve as hiding spots.

There's two medium sized boxes in there.

They were a bit better this morning and were happy enough to snatch a few mealworms and let me stroke them while they eat.

When my cots were growing up, they would practice jumping and flapping around. Mine weren't scared or upset they were just practicing and playing. After a week or so they stopped doing it when they realized they boink if they go any higher.

My indoor quail actually freak out if it's completely dark at night. So I leave a light on for them.

You could try clipping their wing feathers. Covering all sides of the cage except the front. Adding more hiding spaces. Keep noises & movement down (ie no loud music, clapping, pets). If they're new to the house it'll take some time for them to get used to the common noises.
