My Red Star hen, Rosie, has suddenly stopped laying eggs. She hasn't layed now for several days and I am concerned. We adopted her a couple months ago and were told she was about 15 months old. She has laid an egg a day until the past week. She has skipped a day once or twice maybe. We thought she was laying somewhere else so we have searched the yard a couple times a day without finding any eggs.
Can anyone give me insight into what's going on? Thanks!

It has been in the upper 90s for a couple weeks now. We are all suffering with the heat. But it is actually cooling down this week. Molting? Perhaps, she has some "feathers pooking out (says the husband)". So, maybe. Is this normal? When should I start to worry?

Not for awhile. Just look at it as her body refueling. When they go through a molt it can last several days or weeks depending on the bird. Another reason they will stop laying is if they go broody.

You will want to watch to make sure she is not egg-bound. If you do a search, you'll find the symptoms for this condition.

As long as she is eating, drinking, and acting normally I wouldn't worry. Takes alot of fuel to molt and regrow feathers, lol. If she was broody she would be nesting and growl and not want to leave the nest or her eggs. Egg bound hens usually go off feed and sometimes water, seek a dark place, or seem/act uncomfortable or in pain. My guess is that your girl is molting if all else is well otherwise - good luck, hope she starts laying for you again soon!

ok I was hoping that I chould get some help with my hens? they are not laying . I have 65 hens and i am getting 15 eggs a day. I need to know what i am doing wrong? i used to get 4dz a day last year but now nothing.

Thanks a lot for your insight! I just love these crazy chickens!

But I am very new at this!

shes probably molting. but, sudden changes in temperature can cause hens to skip laying for a while. its normal for them to stop laying at that age.
