Like I said, there's always exceptions to the rule.

I never liked messing with the rooster. Once I go after them to pick them up while being attacked, they usually run away if I don't catch them, lol. "Come here you little s.o.b.!!" Hahahah. I always liked Barred Rocks. MisUnderstood, Barred rocks are a great breed, and the roosters are very impressive. If you can work it out so you can keep him, do it. If not, that is understandable. You don't want abused hens. Neither would I.

Would raising a Roo from a baby chick make a difference in it's behavior?
If he is handled very often while growing up does that make them calmer or more aggressive or makes no difference?

It's spring time and there are lots of new baby chicks being hatched!

I don't think it makes a difference. I've heard of aggressive hand raised roos and non-aggressive ones.

Update on Frankie= She is doing well, her eye is healing nicely. She is back with her hen friends and all getting along fine.

Clark will eventually be placed in a new home but for now he is in a nice big coop with a few of his lady friends and all are happy.

Thank you all for your replies!

I've heard salmon faverolles are extremely docile. Roos get beat up by other breeds. Wyandottes are calm as well. Just remember that even in docile breeds there are aggressive individuals. I think you made the right decision in getting rid of your aggressive rooster. New roosters are very easy to find. :)

Boy is that try about finding other new Roos! I currently have 10 up and coming young men three of which I started with and the other 7 are their sons that i was trying to hang on to. I say trying as one of my eldest roos just got the beat down by his son and ****** near lost his eye. Which is why i was reading this post. I see now the flock has turned on Sammy and wont let him back in. His eye was damaged but to what extent I cannot tell yet. I have been Neosporining the outer and putting an eye ointment from when I had an eye infection called Gentak (generic Gentamicine. Not spelled right) I keep sam in a baby barn with warmer and younger chickens at night and daytime let the other older birds free range with sam in the pen. I have way too many roos and i totally get it now, but falsely kept hoping that because the three older roos got along that their sons would blend on in. They all free range during the day normally and they all have diffreent places in the yard they go. Also they are Cochin and gentle by nature. However some of the sons were crossed with my Polish hen and now I have two huge roos that want to hump or kill anythiig in their path andcant find a home for them that wont eat them. Their maama Angel was my baby and got killed by coyote last year so I meant to keep Elvis and Panda.but haveing doubts now.Anyway sam tries to open his eye but i have to clean the gooey out oof it daily and fighting like heck to make sure he eats and stays hydrated and mostly stays safe. He got out twice on accident and five more roos gave chase. Stupid me for thinking my rooseters would somehow be the exception to nature....

Yay for Frankie! Too bad about clark tho but it does happen. I have such a hard time getting rid of my birds. They get named at birth so that pretty well seals the deal. Which is why I have 10 roosters and 13 hens......and building another pen and coop asap. i have real trouble putting down sick or suffereing animals too. I just cannot bring myself to do it. My hands freeze up. Thankfully, I guess, the only ones I lost were less than a week old, and went pretty fast. I just loved on them until they passed. Hope I grow up someday
