My Rooster doesnt do his job

Actually its a 30 to 1 . Before there were 2 roosters and they got along, as much as 2 roosters can. the litle one would go afterthe mixtbarred rock one afoten. I had to kill that one but the barred rock was enifective. But yeah i do have more chickens tatio then ai should.

I live in the azores. And its been a rainy and windy winter so far. But my cousin just sent me a video and i will share of a broody hen with 18 eggs and she picked a terible place to be broody.

But back to topic. This flock is a product of my late uncle who loved animals. So we continued to keep then withou knowing anything about them. These last 6 months i have been learning alot, that one reason im here to lear from you guys. Thanks

I seem him hump 2-3 chickens when i let them free range. So thats not the problem. Unless hes humping the ones who arent laying eggs.

I know i have alot of problems here- 1 roosters for 30 hens. But these 30 hens only lay about avg 8-10eggs daily. My cousin has 22 hens and get 17-18 eggs daily. This flock will mostly be culled in teh next year. I will keep a few i like.

What i would like is to put a few seperate and try and see how many eggs a specific hen puts in a week. No eggs bybe bye. Several eggs they can contineu.

My rooster is a mixedbreed of barred or plymouth rock. Testerday my dad switched him with an all black rooster. Hes actually very beautifull. I ll try and put some pics this week.

Yes i did. I thank you all for taking the time to help me out.

And yes of the remaining 23 i dont expect a good number from there. If i get 10 chicks ill be happy. This incubation was never about getting the max number of eggs htach, it was justanother way to get more experience.

But like i said. Last time i do it in the winter. My incubator is full of water and humidity never hcanges from 50%. Which is strange. But we have high humidity all year long.

I need to cull some chickens. Trying to convince my old man to kill a few of the old ones. We never killed chickens before, just roosters. Chickens either get killed by predators or natural causes here. That has to change. I have 12+ 1 hen ( cant walk, crooked paws so they will need space.

Thanks for all your responses. You helped me out alot.

Wait till April to start separating and culling. This time of year, they are just beginning to start laying again. Older hens don't lay as much as younger hens, but older hens tend to be better broodies. Nutrition can also affect laying rate and fertility, so make sure everybody is getting plenty of feed (not scratch).

I´ll wait till the weather gets warmer. Actually i dont want them to get broody. I have an incubator to do the work.

As for the food. The get theyre usuall ration plus corn. I like to give them bread, thay go neuts for bread. Left overs, salads etc. And i let then free range on grass part every day.

Eventually thatflcok will go bye bye. Im looknig at sellers from diferent breeds. I got my breeds set, now just looking for the right sellers.

Thanks for your time.

If you're feeding layer feed, it's got just enough protein in it to support egg production if it's the only thing they get. When you start giving them other things in addition to the feed, it lowers their overall intake of protein to the point that they just can't produce eggs. Switching to a higher protein feed (at least 18%), cutting out all the goodies (including corn), and giving them crushed oyster shell for calcium may help get them all laying again.

Good to know that. We feed them like we do our pigs. The more they eat the better they lay. Guess not. Thank you.
