my rooster has an infected eye

Hi! I noticed this morning that my rooster's eye is very swollen and is partially covered in a yellow film. I went to the vet and he prescribed an ointment to put on is eye 3-5 times a day for a week. I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this and could give me some advice. It is really bothering him and he keeps scratching at it and rubbing it on his feathers. I was told that I should try to "squeeze" his eye to get the puss out. I am afraid that if I do this I will hurt him more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
