My rooster has paid for himself. Warning, graphic

I had a hawk attack a rooster, and kill it. But I think the hawk was probably trying to attack hens, and I assume the rooster threw him self into the mix to protect them and got killed.

Ozzy has no injuries. I'm suspecting whatever it was was young. It could have been the owl coming back, but that's more doubtful. Too many bunnies to eat this time of year plus the main run has bird mesh over the top. He hasn't been back since I placed it up. Plus it happened on a night that was extra stormy. We were in the basement under tornado warnings for a few hours, 4 inches of rain in 6 hours. Most birds would said heck no to that.

Trail cam is up to see if something tries again, weasel trap is up and ready. No coon trap yet but that's next.

Yeah, I lost 3 hens to an owl 2 winters ago. He waltzed right into the coop, pulled them out.... not fun at all!

Onto Rockys status! She's eating and drinking and beeping at us. Starting to enjoy being a spoiled house chicken. The wound is fully scabbed over now.

My other hens are having troubles though. She was the dominant hen. Hopefully next week she's not too sore to go out and beat them all up again lol

I've seen raccoons out during thunderstorms, so + I wouldn't be surprised if that was your culprit.

Raccoons in a chicken coop cause mass destruction and your rooster didn't get a scratch.On the other hand an owl will walk inside a chicken coop and kill the ones that don't run .

Not to underestimate how good your rooster is but tthey can't even see in the dark.
