My rooster has started mounting my pullets. Does that mean eggs are coming shortly?

My rooster has started mounting some of my pullets but not all of them. I have one I know is laying eggs now but he hasn’t mounted her. The other 4 he has been mounting haven’t started yet. He’s been doing that for the last 3 days but still no eggs from them. How long does it take? They’re all 20 weeks old.

The rooster is 1 and 1/2 years old. He’s very good to his gals & nice to us. It’s my pullets who are 20 weeks old.

Well, my guess would be that a rooster will mount any hen that he deems big/old enough to mate. That isn't a direct sign that the pullets will begin laying soon, but yours are at an age when they should begin to lay shortly.

I sure hope so. My little red sex link novagen started laying Monday. She’s given me an egg every day so far but our rooster who is 1 1/2 years old never tries to mount her. He displays but that’s it. Meanwhile, he’s mounting my Rhode Island reds, black australorps, & one of my Easter Eggers. Has been for last 3-4 days. No eggs from them yet.

You don't need a rooster to get eggs.

I know. I have him because I would like to breed chickens. He’s also good at protecting his hens & keeping the peace between the hens.

He may have mounted her when you weren't looking.
Or he's not too aggressive so lets her be until she willingly submits.
A 'good' cock will not mount any pullet that is not ready to lay.
It can be a couple days or a couple weeks after squatting before you see an egg.

Sorry...I read yours posts as you were linking the cock mounting the pullets to them laying/not laying eggs.
