Last night I found Rosie sitting on top of a new bale of pine shavings, not terribly unusual since all of the girls have done this. I thought she just wasn’t ready for bed yet and made a mental note to check on her roosting spot in the morning. Bern decided to let me sleep in and open the coop for me since he’s on vacation. Nice! But Rosie was eating in the run when I finally saw her. Later I went out for eggs and poop scooping. Rosie was back on the bale in a resting position I thought she was thinking this as a good egg laying spot so I took her down. At first she just stood there in the middle of the coop. Then she started to walk toward the bale. She had a very visible limp on her left leg. I picked her up and checked her over not finding anything remarkable including bumblefoot. I put her down on the floor as curious flock mates came in. One, Doris, suddenly jumped on Rosie and began pummeling her! I’m thinking she sees her weakness. I think she sprained her leg jumping down from the roost or some other perch. I have put her in the dog cage that is inside the coop for such things. She can rest on one level with food, water, grit, oyster shell, and pine shavings.
