My 'Ruby' not doing well (not suffering anymore)

I know I sound insensitive but you need to get her to a vet to diagnose what is going on. If a vet visit is out of the question it is in her best interest to be put down. It sounds like she has egg peritonitis or is an internal layer or her crop is impacted. The poor girl is probably dehydrated and if she has an impacted crop she is starving to death.

I am blunt but sometimes certain things need to be said. Most of us have gone through something like this. It's not pleasant but it's the reality of owning chickens or any pet.
I checked her this morning before I left for work & the food that was in her crop last night is still there. It's not a lot so could that mean it's impacted with it being so little food? I read about using olive oil last night & massaging the crop so I did that this morning. I'm going to check again when I get home & if its still there I'll do the olive oil again. I'm giving her water with vitamins and also water with apple cider vinegar.

I could not feel any eggs and the book did not recomend checking inside for fear of injury or infection. I lost her last night is spite of me efforts. She died comfortably. Sorry I did not answer your question about her going into the nestbox and trying to lay, as far as I know she didn't. I hope Ruby is doing better. Thanks again for your support.

I'm sorry that you lost her. At least she isn't suffering anymore.

I think you should be able to feel the egg by feeling of her abdomen, at least thats what I've seen on here from other people's postings, in case you come across this in the future. The worst part is not knowing what is really going on when they are sick. That makes it hard. I do hope that your day gets better!

Ok, I'm sorry I just went back and re-read your posts and saw that you checked her abdomen and it felt like the others. I hope all your other hens continue to do well.

Just checking in on Ruby. How is she today?

Not good again today! She seems to perk up some after giving her the apple cider vinegar but she's still not eating or drinking unless I give her water. BUT she just pooped out a worm! I'm sure you can imagine how angry I am having just had her checked for worms yesterday & she came back clean!!!

Thankfully I have some wazine & am currently trying to get advice from dawg53 (the worming knowledge king, as I like to call him) on how to worm one chicken. I want to put it directly in her instead of her whole thing of water seeing as how she isn't drinking on her own. I plan on worming the others asap but right now my main concern is her since she hasn't ate in 3 or 4 days. Thank you again for checking on her.

By the way $20.50 for a fecal test at the vet!!!!

Wow!

Well at least this is something you can treat!!!

I hope she gets better soon!

Yeah, I couldn't believe it! Weird how she seems to be the only chicken infected but I'm sure its just a matter of time for the others. I don't care though they are all getting wormed tomorrow!! Thank you again for everything & I will keep everyone updated on her. I really feel as though she's in a critical state b/c she is so weak it's hard for her to walk. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed and my prayers up!

Here is a copy and paste from Dawg53 on worming

Valbazen which is a cattle wormer. It kills more types of worms than all the others combined, And you don't have to worry about a massive worm kill like with piperazine or ivermectin which will sometimes clog the intestines..Valbazen slowly starves the parasites over a 2 to 5 day period..Valbazen is also used for human treatments at 400 mg child or adult..So unless you are allergic to it, it's ok to consume the eggs after treatment, but most I know wait two weeks .. Dosage is 1/2 cc orally to adult large fowl.. 1/4 cc for bantams and young standard breeds

You still may want to check with him for further advice with her as weak as she is. Make sure she stays hydrated for sure.

My prayers go out to her also!!! I can't believe the vet didn't find the worms.
