do not beat your dog with a dead chicken. A dog does not understand what you are doing or why.....he only knows you are hitting him. And tying a dead chicken around his neck will not work either. dogs ROLL in dead chickens, so why on earth would a dead one around his neck deter him? He would love it! Confine the dog or the chickens.

To answer some questions.....My three dogs have an 1/2 acre of picket fenced in land to play in, the coop is an off shoot of the picket fencing. I would never tie up my dog. All two of my dogs have been through obedience training and therapy dog training. Scarlett the chicken killer has been obedience trained. The dogs love being outside during the day and sleep comfy in their beds at night. I provide as much comfort to the as I do my chickens. I cook healthy meals for all the animals in our house hold. I am just at my wits end on how an 80 lb dog can dig under concrete while being shocked?????

how old is she? Are you keeping her going with her obedience work? Sounds like she has a very high prey drive (and you see first hand why invisible fences aren't good for a lot of dogs, though that isn't what you have, but anyway...) Work with her specifically on leaving the chickens alone. She may NEVER be able to be trusted around them unsupervised. But you should be able to get her to leave them alone when you are there. Until then, keep her leashed or confined away from the birds.

There really is no shortcut method to get her to leave the birds alone. I doubt an e-collar would work since she is ignoring the tape. The key to the training is to stop the behavior before it starts and keep her attention on you. Once her mind goes to the birds, there is no getting it back.

I have the same issue with my dog. She wont touch the birds if i am in the yard with her...(because she KNOWS shes not supposed to.)
But if she breaks loose and gets in the yard without me..they are dead.
OOh shes so stubborn!

try shockiing yourself... no really, and if it doesn't bug you... then it aint gonna bug the dog. I know, sounds messed up, but try it out. I had a friend with a dog that kept getting out even with the fence... Turns out, she had the setting to low so the little jolt the dog got was just a tingle... yeah, so, out went the dog... it was funny to watch though... I'd suggest having some one take the shock... hehehe some one you got a little grudge against. HEHEHE. evil me.

Five of my six dogs all wanted to chase and, I presume eat, my chickens from the first day I got them. All, except for Jake, my avatar. Two years later, only one dog chased and tried to catch my chickens! She was my soul-mate dog, GiGi. Gigi is gone now, to my sorrow. My chickens can free range with my dogs, the only thing is, the dogs try to eat the veggies I give the chickens. It is very funny to watch a dog spit out a tomato! It did take work to get the dogs to understand not to go after the chickens. I did not hit them, all I did was say "No, bad dog" and say the word leave. (Much repetatition) It took time, but I can leave my dogs with my chickens. Well that is before I realized I have coyotes. Chickens are now under 24/7 run lock down....

I would never hurt, injure, abuse or give away my dog. Yes, Scarlett is a bird dog...instinct is an issue. My goal is to provide a safe environment for dogs and chickens. I feel I have been very lucky with the security in my coop so far concerning other predators. I have wanted chickens all my life and had the opportunity to raise several chicks to adulthood while living on a dairy farm growing up. As an adult I vowed to myself that I would some day have a small flock to enjoy. Seeing my dog murder my sweet chickens breaks my heart. Why am I blessed with two dogs that love the chickens and one that loves to murder them???? I have never seen Scarlett so happy then when she is running through the chicken yard with a half dead screaming chicken in her mouth. Can't we all just get along???

It sounds like your chickens and dogs are never going to get along, save yourself the trouble and either shoot the dog or get rid of the chickens.

to Scarlett it's a game. You've brought these flapping squawking squeeky toys and dumped them right in her lap. when one toy is "broken" she can just grab another. That is why it can be so hard to break a dog of the habit.
Keep her ONLEASH. Keep her under supervision at ALL times. When you can't be with her, then she needs to be confined. Otherwise, you need to decide between her and the chickens. If this continues, you are going to come to resent her and her behavior. That isn't fair to you, her, OR the birds.
