My second broody hatch! Hatch-a-long!

Hey!

Excited to have another broody hen this season! I had my first ever hatch under a silkie last month, and she produced 4 live chicks for me (LO). It was an amazing experience as an incubator only experienced chicken keeper, so I was extremely happy to see one of my Bovan Black hens had gone broody.

Funny enough, when I went to collect some eggs from the Lavender Orpington pen, I also have a lady in there guarding eggs! Holy smokes! I'm sure if I'll let that hen sit or not, I currently have an incubator full and my Black hen sitting on 6 right now. I had filled the bator with Bovan Black x Lavender Orpington eggs to product next season's layers since my girls are all getting older and I don't want to end up with not enough eggs!

She is so cute. Just to point out, for “Hatch-Alongs” you have to include the words “Hatch-Along” in the title of the thread. I also have a broody hen right now. She is sitting on 2 eggs that are 4 days old and 5 eggs that are 11 days old. I will be returning the five eggs to the incubator on day 18 (they were already in the incubator for a few days before I let Lacey sit on some eggs). I will be candling the 2 newer eggs tomorrow! And the other 5 are currently during pretty good. Good luck on your hatch!

I have a broody sitting on 7 11 day old eggs. Started with some under her and the rest in an older Hovabator but the temps kept spiking high so I have them all to her. Hoping they’re all OK, I’m a novice at candling and now she won’t let me peek. Fingers crossed for a good hatch for all of us!

Love broodies!! We have a whole mess of chickens (four different coops with plans to add another section that will be a bachelor flock) and the past six months have been filled with hens constantly going broody. Our Partridge Penedesenca (Heatmor) has gone broody two or three times and has hatched babies each time. Our Frost White Legbar went broody at the same time as our Olive Egger, but she decided on Day 16 that she was no longer broody ( ). Luckily we were able to put her eggs under our OE. While those two were broody our Barred Rock went broody and hatched one egg. In the midst of all of that my black silkie went broody and was INCREDIBLY determined. At the time there were no roosters in her coop so we just slid some eggs under her from the other coops.

A lot of them hatched at the same time and most of them ended up being adopted by my black silkie, Inky (who is the most wonderful mother). Our PP and OE raised their chicks and are now back in their regular coop. We moved our PP with her older baby because they are attached at the hip and cannot be separated. Right after my black silkie hatched her babies, my white silkie went broody. At the same time our Polish went broody. The silkie hatched one baby and the Polish hatched two. Sadly the silkie's baby died at about a month old, and we still aren't sure why. Our cochin went broody right at that time and hatched two babies. They stayed with her at first but she wasnt the greatest mom and after a few weeks we noticed they were missing feathers, bleeding around their wings, and were a bit stunted in growth. We took them away and put them in a brooder and they are doing great now.

All during that time we hadn't noticed that our Barred Rock went broody for the second time in a few months. I came outside one morning two weeks ago and got the shock of my life when I saw two babies toddling around with her and her son lol.

Our silkies are broody again and are sitting on eggs I ordered.
