At the moment I don't have an chickens but am planning on getting some Light Sussex if I can get my hands on some. The Council says I can have a max of 5 but planning to start with 2 as I am not sure my temp coop will take more then that.

Currently I have a small avairy which is 1200W x 600D x 1700H
(4' x 2' x 5'6") that they will be locked up in at night. We are then going to build a run that will be sort of L shaped going about 5 meters one way and about 3 or 4 the other. The Chickens will also be able to move around under my exisiting suspensed avairy.

I am planning on clipping wings so they don't fly up and scare my parrots that will be nesting above them. Will post some pictures when I get them. I hope to either get another coop that is larger that will allow us to get a few more in the future

sounds good, cant wait to see pictures!!!! I also have parrots but keep them apart from my chickens...I have my b/g macaw outside Eragon...but I would love to get my Cockatoo, and my Af. Greys outside also. Just to make room in the house...and Im sure they would love being back to nature so to speak. Eragon loves it outside.

That sounds very nice.

2txmedics - I had a Umbrella, a moluccan and a B/G Macaw many many years ago. They were in a huge outdoor aviary during the day in the house on perches at night. Spoiled they were.

It's a great idea to put your parrots out side but I would really, really reconsider putting your chickens in with them. You may have what seems like a perfectly healthy chicken but they could be carriers of diseases that could be transferred to your parrots and could even be deadly. Even what some people consider a "minor" cold in chickens can be absolutely devastating to your parrots.

Thanks guys. I would love an African Grey but sadly they cost about $5000 over here.

As for them being with the parrots they will not be in the same pen but have access to the area under the enclosed suspendeds. It is common for parrot breeders over here to keep their chickens under their birds and at a talk a few weeks ago one of the US breeders showed us his set up and he does the same thing.

I spoke to my vet and she said that as long as the chickens are vaccinated and kept clean with yearly health checks there should not be an issue. Chickens are very effective in cleaning up all the waste from under the avairies and keeping any mouse issues you have done.

I have Quakers and Green Cheeks outside in these avairies, however if I see an issue I will block off the area and keep them in their run.

well we have spoken to a breeder of Light Sussex and he has a few for me that I can pick up in a little overa week (which gives me time to finish up the coop) we are planning on to at the moment as we don't reall have a big enough coop as they are a larger breed. When we save some money and buy the coop that I want which will house up to 5 which is what the council will allow us to have. I know that alot of people can't understand why I am going for show birds but they are pets as well as layers so we wanted to go for ones with really pretty markings
