My Silkie hatched her ducklings this morning!!!!

The ducklings are three days old now and are doing great, enjoying the occasional splash in the shallow bowl I put out, with rocks in the bottom for safety. Mama Silkie is worried about them, but gamely stands by right at the edge of the water bowl, to offer help if needed. She keeps taking drinks from the bowl, not as much because she's thirsty, I don't think, but to show them what it's supposed to be used for.

I have a Silkie sitting on 1 duck egg that is pipping now. The duckling is a Muscovy/Magpie cross, so I am curious to see what it will look like!

My cochin also just hatched some ducklings, Calls.

kristenm1975, do your ducklings seem to understand "chicken"? While my cochin is a great mother, keeping them warm, feeding them, etc, the ducks don't seem to understand the chicken language. When the hen clucks excitedly when she finds a bug, the babys pay no attention.

Good question about chicken-speak. I'm not sure if the ducklings can understand the mama hen or not. I do know she seems a bit at a loss sometimes, since she's so tiny and they are all so big in comparison to any chicks of her own she would have hatched out. It takes a LOT of maneuvering to get them all under her and most times, it doesn't work at all so they just smush up against her wings.

I'll keep a watch on the communication system they work out. It's very interesting!

they are so cute. I am planing on getting some duck eggs and putting them under my broody hen. I didn't know if it would work so I am so glad to see that your little hen hatched the ducks.
