instead of trying to pet and hold her, start out by feeding her something yummy out of your hand. If she pecks at the treet and hurts your hand, wear a glove.
She will soon see you and your hands as a friendly and good thing and loose her defensive actions hopefully.
Be warned however that not all chickens become compleatly tame.

I have one i call Crazy Bird as from a young pullet acted like i was her mortal enemy and would freek out when i got to close.
now after 4 years of making it a point to throw her a couple treets, she shows up at my feet first to get the first treet. I dont however pick her up or coddle her nor do i want to.
