My silkie is laying...now what?

Well that's good to know. I heard silkie's weren't very picky when it comes to broodiness and eggs. I even learned that they are known for stealing others eggs. I thought that was funny...I just hope mine is one of those.

I was going to say this, but also add.. although she is with a boy, the eggs may not be fertile yet, cuz she's new to the whole thing. If it were me, I would collect the eggs and check fertility first and then start incubating after she has been laying for about a month- the eggs should be a good, reasonable size by then.
Good Luck!

Just from experience... I say let them be. When my sumatra started laying last spring, I left her eggs in her nest. I started to worry as the days went by and she still wasn't setting. Finally, after 21 days she started setting, 14 eggs she sat there and hatched every single one. They all grew up healthy and are all still doing well.

Hmmm....she layed for 21 days and sat for 21 days... I just now realized that. interesting

Good advice but she cleared things up a bit the hen is a little older and has laid before and has just started laying again but Laskaland is right you should check for fertility.

I guess chickens are like us... don't tackle a job 'til it's worth doing. Just 'cause i have one pair of dirty jeans, doesn't mean i'm ready to do laundry!

Let me clarify.. some hens only set when they have enough to make it worth while.

Good Luck try them all----I have just started my interest in hatching- bought two incubators, did two batches no luck, but #3 hatched 4 out of 6 eggs ( silkies) my first----then on a mixed lot of 18 -6 hatched.
I had ordered my eggs on ebay--- I now have 3 lots on the way- 6 black silkies- 6 white silkies, and 6 golden cochin. I will add 4 from my mixed chickens, and a buddy at my husbands job is sending me some for him, black giants--Im 47 and learning so much on chickens, bought several books and can email a great sight for beginners if ya want it email me at [email protected]----djavascript:insert_text('
