I have five silkies that are all around one month old. Two are larger (and I believe male) and like to run at one another, leap into the air, and bump chests. When they're not doing that, however, all five try their best to get the others to sit on top of them! They sort of dive head first under their friends, and sit or lay down. If the "top chick" tries to walk away, they scoot along with it, trying to remain underneath. My BRs don't do weird things like this. Is this typical silkie behavior? Are they wanting a momma to sit on them?

hi I raise silkies. and when mine were going up up until about three months old they tried to sit or sleep under my older pullet
this was so funny to see at three months old trying to squeeze themselves under her bottom which was impossible because they were too big! the behaviors your experiencing are perfectly normal. the chest bumping is establishing the pecking order. even my girls did it. its pretty adorable! I just love silkies! they are the sweetest kindest most gentle chickens there are. I gave my girl her first bath yesterday and you would think she was trained and had done it a million times she was soon good! another surprise I got with my silkies is that they are great layers. I always read they don't lay very well but I'm getting eggs every day to every other day! they are full of surprises. your silkies sound perfectly normal. I wouldn't worry a bit. :) :)

Thank you for the responses! This is (obviously!) my first time with silkies and they are a very different kind of bird :) LOL I'm glad to hear that their behavior is normal. I was afraid I wasn't giving them something they needed!
