I just got home from work & she's in the run eyes closed, on her side. I'm not brave enough to get to close to her, DH will be here soon. It doesn't look like she was harmed by anything & she's been laying normally & looking & acting fine. She was perfectly fine this morning when I fed them before work. Its not really hot today & they had plenty of water.
I'm praying I don't have a disease in my flock. I'll be looking more closely at her when DH gets home, for now I put up wire so the other girls can't get near her.
They were all laying right next to her dead body when I got home:hit

Please give me advice on what could have caused this & what I can do to prevent it.
What sicknesses don't show signs? I spend at least an hour a day with these girls, I would have noticed if was acting strange.
Rest in Peace my big, beautiful girl.

I know how that is. I just had a leghorn do the same thing. She was at point of lay and gave me two pullet eggs... and just one day, was dead in the nest box. I had only seen her a few hours earlier running around like normal too! Since everyone else was fine I just burried her.

Oh dang it, Kelly!

I'm so sad for you right now. Having watched our little ones grow up together, I kinda feel like their west coast Auntie. You've shared their little antics with all of us and we've enjoyed the beautiful photos you've taken of them all these months. My heart is breaking for you.

I'm

that everything is OK with the rest of your flock and that it was just Filomena's time to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

So many hugs are flying from my flock to yours. Hugs Kelly!

Why do we do this to ourselves??

This heartbreaking but they make me smile so much too! And my son loves them. We lost another last night

I am sorry for your loss.
I doubt you have anything to worry about with the rst of your flock. Sometimes hens just fall over. No reason. They just go suddenly. I was shocked when it first happened to one of miine, but found that it is just one of those things.

thank you all

We just buried her. DH & I looked over her pretty closely & couldn't find any injuries. Her vent area looked fine & her eyes were closed & her face looked peaceful. She sorta looked like she was stretched out taking a dustbath. There was dried fluid, NOT BLOOD near her, I'm wondering if she vomited something up.
I will be an absolute basket case if the rest of my girls die. We are not letting them go to that area of the run, we will turn the soil & rake it tomorrow. For now I'm watching them closely, unfortunatly we have to go to a BBQ. I really don't want to leave them right now.

Filomena was bossy, She was the first to fly out of the brooder box & when it came to roost time, she always got her favorite spot.
she loved coming in the back door & walking around the kitchen. she loved sitting next to me on my bench. Her voice was loud & distinct & I'll miss her very much.

She sure is beautiful, I'm sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is. I still cry over my girls often and it's been a month since their passing.

I like to think my Grandfather (Poppy) is looking over them now. He used to have a few of is own back in the days. Take Care :aww
