my son is wanting to be a vegetarian!?

It's about time for it to start catching up with him, Ewesheep. Anyone can eat anything they want - til they hit fifty. Then they pay.

Ask me how I found out. LOL.

I think a lot of people who "go vegetarian" are also conscious about their activity levels and perhaps are healthier because of leading a healthier lifestyle, but I don't think it is solely because of the elimination of meat from their diet.

The facts are that it is extremely easy and possible to be healthy and not eat meat - most of our family did not eat meat regularly for many generations, because it was expensive, basically. There's no reason to get upset if anyone wants to be a vegetarian.

It's much harder to do if you eliminate all dairy and egg AND meat, but with diligence even that can be healthy.

Most of the vegans I've met, though, they are eating a ridiculous diet and aren't following any of the basic rules of nutrition. What they should do to make a vegan diet healthy -they ain't doin'. There are a lot of non-nutritionist extremists dictating to vegans what they should eat - and they generally blindly follow.

What's 'religiously'? Following a vegan diet? I wouldn't get too far down that road - I'm sure most people have something crazy they do 'religiously'....according to someone else....

I think the problem is that people are just - GULLIBLE. Someone tells 'em ABC is the secret to being healthy and happy, and they just swallow it, hook line and sinker.

That was my point. If I could convince you that you will live longer if you do this or that would you try it? maybe blindly? maybe with just enough knowledge to be comfortable with it? If eating a vegan or vegetarian diet made me feel better or if I could see a noticeable difference in overall health in one I may try it. So far all the health nuts I know still suffer from all the cancers and diseases like everyone else. They look thin and anemic for the most part. There are other methods of eating that are based on how we eat more than what we eat like timing and sequence/order.

Well I don't know that 'all' the 'health nuts' all look thin and anemic. I've never found that to be true.

I see a FEW people like that. I think quite a few of them have other very serious health problems. I know a gal who had cancer - it made her very thin as did the treatments. But she was determined to eat good and felt it really would help her beat the thing. She's had a couple of recurrances but is still hangin' in there.

But that is not the majority of 'health nuts' I know. Some of them indeed are THIN - but that is supposed to be good for ya! And it sure don't seem to hurt 'em. I'm winded on a hike before they are!

vegetarian and being a 'health nut' really has gone mainstream. It's pretty darn normal in most of the US and Europe and everywhere else I go. has been for a very long time. It was over 40 years ago I was gorging myself on Burcher Muesli and yogurt at the airport fast food restaurant in Zurich, and not so many years ago I was snorking down a big cupa Udon and sesame sauce at another airport. If this is being a health nut I wanna be a health nut!

Most of the 'health nuts' I know are having a great time, they look like a million bucks and they are very healthy and fit, exercising, reading up on nutrition, and have a really fun time eating the things they like to eat - lots of fresh fruit, leafy vegetables, lots of herbs and spices, locally made dairy products are very popular, and I would go over to their place for dinner in a heartbeat. And they LOVE our chicken eggs!

Does it prevent cancer? Well, according to what I've read, there are big benefits from being trim, sticking to lean meats and reducing dietary fat, eating lots of leafy green vegetables and the whole nine yards.

The SICKEST person I know is the one who ate the roasts and french fries for the last 40 years. Heart disease, gall bladder disease, joint problems, and a whole lot more he ain't a tellin' us about.

Ewesheep, does your husband take any vitamin supplements? I would get him on a good men's formula multivitamin, a calcium supplement with vitamin D and magnesium, and some fish oil/flax seed oil supplements. His body is robbing his bones of calcium that could be why his joints ache. I started having issues with muscular and bone pain when I hit menopause. My doctor said I needed the supplements because it would be very hard for me to eat enough calcium and minerals to replace what my body was taking from my bones. The fish oil is a natural anti inflammatory and will help with muscular and bone pain and it is good for your heart, so is the flax seed oil. My chiropractor told me that and I didn't really believe it. I took them though for months and my pain did decrease. Then I ran out of the fish and flax seed oil capsules and just didn't replace them. Well, in 2 weeks my pain was back BIG TIME! So I went to the store and stocked up! I may not always take my multivitamin, but I will always take my calcium, fish oil, and flax seed oil. Also, I think I read that quinoa is the only non meat food source that supplies ALL the essential protein amino acids required. You fix it like rice and can make all kinds of dishes with it, just like rice. So if you eat quinoa on a regular basis you wont be deficient in any particular amino acids.

I think exercise is the thing that helps with any diet. You can eat good foods like the ones on the posters in high schools when I was a teen and stay healthy. Most people in the world eat things we in the U.S. would not eat and are healthy for the most part. What you do apart from eating is more important to your health I believe than some strict dietary plan. We don't spend any time gathering our food and that contributes to the internal problems more than eating the occasional cheeseburger. Cancer is non-discriminating for the most part it attacks everyone potentially, how many times have you heard of someone getting it that really suprises you? For what it is worth The Bible explains a very plausible origin of disease.
