I have to wait on the next hatch from Cackle Hatchery. I am picking up ten Spitzhaubens on the 8th. Now I am confused. If the one in the pic has waddles and comb and lays eggs? I will not be able to tell what I have until they lay
Not only the wattles and combs and laying eggs can tell you that they are pullets.
Roughly around two to three months old I was able to tell the difference in sex...by looking at the headdresses. If they are more pointed and longer, more wattles in size, then they are cockerals.
You can see the cockeral in one of my pic with the group of Spitz. He has a more pronounced V comb and longer headresses and his neck feathers are more whiter than the pullets.
Yes, as they get older, the pullets develop wattles and little combs too.
There is only one rooster in this picture.
These are all hens:
The ones who start developing wattles around 6-8 weeks are definately boys. They also seem to be more lanky than the girls. I had one cockerel who started crowing at two weeks.
I have not had any hatch with leg problems, but I did get two with curled toes this hatch.
thanks for the pics and info Carla, since I will be new at having Spitz this will help me out a lot now. They are gorgeous. I saw pics of them at Cackle Hatchery and had to have some! Cannot wait to get them.
I love your Spitzs!
And thank you for posting. I was starting to think I was imagining my hen laying eggs, lol. I knew it was a hen.
But I started second guessing myself with all the other posters thinking she was a roo.
I want more Spitzs. Where is the best place to get them. I am in MA.
