My Spring, 2010 Birds and Setup (Pic Heavy)

Jaku, Those tractors are awesome!!! I would have never thought of watering the birds AND weighing the tractor down at the same time!!!

Time to dust off the plans and order some pvc fittings!!!

Well, the PVC fittings total about $100. You have to get specialty joints, as there are 5 way fittings required, as well as others that you won't find in a plumbing store. On pvcplans.com, there are links to stores that sell the fittings. I believe I went with A to Z supply. As for the main frame, it's just a bunch of 10ft 1" SCH40 PVC pipes, which run about $2-3 apiece. I think the tarps were about $30, but you can get cheaper ones too. I think the wheels were around $10 apiece. Then there's just the wire and zip ties to hold it on. You should be able to build one for around $200, buying everything new. They go together super fast, are very easy to build, the plan is great, and they are very light and easy to move.

So how long did it take to build those two tractors?

Well, I cut everything ahead of time, which took about 1/2 hour. After that, the frame went together in about 15 minutes. Putting the wire on takes some time- a few days for me, working between my regular job and screaming children. The tarp also takes a couple of hours to get right and cut around the wheels. All in all, it's MUCH easier to assemble than a wooden one.

Have you used that water setup before? It looks good, but how do you clean the bowl? Does it get messy?

This will be the first time I use the waterer. I'm sure it will get messy- I'll probably just unhook the hose and spray it out every now and then. That waterer also has the option of a stand alone ground mount, which would eliminate the problem, although it shouldn't get too nasty being up off of the ground.

jaku - do you have any problems with splayed legs with the chicks just on newspaper? I've heard stories so I always put a few inches of sawdust down in the brooder.

Nice box of chicks and poults. Let me guess. I bet they came from Townline. I beleive I saw them when I brought to Grand Rapids postoffice. Good luck raising. I sure like your pens.
