My Sweet Hubby's Idea of Landscaping

Welcome back, Jacie. I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering how things were going for you.

My DH has decided again to attempt to grow at least a small patch of grass. The weeds and bird seeds are growing nicely. Maybe someday we'll have grass out there! LOL

My DH mows anything down. Roses, hibiscus, palms, everything! If it grows, it goes, is his motto. UGH!!!

I love these stories! My DH has mowed over a small fig I was trying to get established (it recovered!) and TWO rosebushes down by the front gage (they did not recover). He, too, doesn't know from clematis...how can you not notice the glam that clematis brings to a fence?

It sounds like there are a bunch of very sweet hubbies out there! When we bought our land in MD, my husband went on a walk just to snap pictures of the flowers and trees to send me.

My DH thinks rhubarb is a noxious weed and can't stand the stuff. Well, years ago, I planted about 5 plants of the nicest deep red rhubarb (given to me by one of my DH's dear friends) and babied them along. Now, Steve was delighted that my DH finally had rhubarb growing in his yard and made sure they were good and healthy. My DH knew how much I like rhubarb and never missed an opportunity to rib me about it. He would say he was going out to mow and would start along the fence behind the shed.

That was where my rhubarb was growing! He used to tell me that "accidents sometimes happen when you are mowing and don't be surprised if I get distracted and mow that poisonous weed down to the ground."

He never did it (even helped me replant it when we moved), but he got a lot of laughs at my expense over that rhubarb.

Pray that it's not a Canada thistle. My native wildflower/grass meadow/prairie was totally taken over by it, and I had to destroy the meadow/prairie entirely last year to be rid of it. All last year, I first sprayed with generic RoundUp (glyphosate), then burned the field entirely, then continued spraying until winter. I have to do the same thing all of this year because it'sssssss baaaaack! I will continue spraying this year, and reseed over the snow in December. This is costing me thousands of dollars, but I LOVE MY PRAIRIE.
Pray that it's not Canada thistle and watch to be sure that it doesn't have hundreds of very small, purple flowers. In order to kill it, you HAVE to kill the very deep root, and that ain't easy t' do.
BTW, Canada thistle originated from Europe, not Canada. It's called Canada thistle because it's Canada's greatest destroyer of cash crops.

I have to go out and mark any new plantings ( and some old) before my husband goes out and mows. Every year it takes forever for my bulbs to come up because my husband mows them down thinking them to be weeds. I now tie ribbons arond everything under 2ft tall and then point them out to him, just to make sure. On the upside though I don't have to mow the yard, so when it's 96 degrees outside i'll happily label instead of mow.
