I am so upset...

I was incubating my eggs in a hovabator with fan, and my 2 year old jimmied the door unlocked and got into the laundry room where the incubator is... He turned the thermostat up and bit chunks out of the styrofoam... It was at 108 right above the eggs when I noticed it... I immediately took the top off and the eggs were very warm... They could have been like that for just a few minutes up to 2 hours...

I put them in my brinsea and will candle them in a couple of days to see if they are all dead... Today is day three for them in the bator and I'm hoping since they are so young maybe it didn't kill all of them.

I could have strangled him but since he is only 2 I could not punish him because I didn't catch him in the act... So is there any hope for them???

UPDATE: 4/20/10
I just candled them and saw spider veins in at least 3 bantam eggs!!!

So at least some made it and I will know in a few days exactly how many made it through hurricane Bobby!

I think some will make it!
I have a 5 year old daughter and a 3 year old son.....I soooooooo sympathize with being a mother of a two year old! lol they are little destruction workers arn't they? cute as anything most days, but very destructive little things!

I do think some will make it

That is hilarious. I wish I still had a little ones to make funny stories like that. Be thankful, and take pictures of the bitemarks for when the toddler grows up. I am just glad the little one did not bite the cord. I am betting the eggs are fine.

No it was hilarious when he let all the air out of all four car tires with a screw and when I caught him all he kept saying is (car broken, car broken me fix...)... Now what he did with the eggs is just sad... Ok maybe the bites are a little funny but not the temp changing...

Wow this sounds exactly like something my two 2 year olds would do, bite marks and all. So far so good for us. I really hope your chicks make it just fine.

You may not be able to punish him but he does need to know he did something bad or something he wasn't supposed to. Show him the bite marks, tell him no, do not bite, do not touch. Toddlers at this age understand what no means, and they are able to understand that no means don't touch.

It may not seem funny or cute now, but I will bet my boots all of you will be telling and laughing about this story in the future. Probably even tomorrow. Or at least after you can candle.

I am sure your eggs and chicks are fine my last hatch ran at 104 for a few hours and then another time 106 all day b/c the house warmed up on a nice day outside and no windows open on the house. One chick quit somewhere after day 18. They did hatch on day 19

This all seems like something my two year old would do, from past experience make sure when you get to lock down you tape the lid shut with masking tape and the windows down b/c if not he will open it up to help the chicks out. P.S. Do Not show him the chicks till they make it to the brooder or he will be really determined they need help b/c they are crying (peeping). Definitely becareful with the holding my two year old loves holding them but leaves something to be desired by far.
