gosh, i love my local hardware store.
not only do they have about 6 - 7 resident cats hanging around everywhere but even the kids who work there are friendly and bend over backwards to help you find stuff. the owners are super chill and at least one of them is there at all times to watch over things.
they don't carry everything, being a small store, but they'll order whatever you want in a heartbeat.
the local TSC is great too. very knowledgable staff, but then again we are kind of in farm country.
however the home cheapo nearby is awful. i had the same thing where i asked someone where the thermometers were and he led me around the store for 10 minutes before finally telling me they didn't have them in stock. i then found them by accident a few minutes later.
i only go there when i have to, otherwise i try and support the local mom & pop lumber mills and hardware stores ...

I recently got a job as a contractor in the new Fresh & Easy markets that are opening here in Calif. I merchandise the magazines. You would not believe the rude people that ask me for information and when I tell them that I don't work for the market they get all huffy. I spent 2 hours there the other day just to learn where things are so that if needed I could get people to the right area for what they were looking for. Just wanted to show you the flip side of the coin.
I've done merchandising too and demos and they DO get all witchy and crabby if you tell them that you don't work there...I once went into Sears to look for something and I had my Zany Brainy T-shirt on because I was at lunch and it was right next door in the mall. Some lunkhead comes over and asks me for help. I told her nicely that I didn't work there; that my name tag and my shirt says ZanyBrainy(It has a guy with glasses in rainbow colours on it) and that she should go to the customer service counter for help...she threatened to go to the store manager because I wasn't a helpful salesperson...It WASN'T even MY STORE!!!Once she started yelling, I walked quickly away...
Many garden centers carry orange oil. It might be easier to find at a local gardening shop than any big box type store. Plant people seem to know what they are talking about, and good nursuries cannot afford an ignorant sales staff.
I hate Wally World. They keep they're check out people ignorant and without authority. I always go to the self chceck out when I go to Wally World; but the last straw was when I got behind someone who thought scanning meant slooowly grabbing the tag, placing it face down on the scanner and holding it there. I barely kept from grabbing her stuff and scannning it for her.
