I've tried trimming my silkies crest.Funny story, she has such long hair that she can't see so what she would do was wet it in the waterer and flick her head back so it kinda got gelled back like Elvis and after a while she realised mud would also do the job and.... ugh. You get the idea

This is Pearl. I have trimmed her crest four times so far and she needs another trim. I swore I'd never trim her crest, but she's a particular favorite of mine and I end up feeling sorry for her, always running into things:

In the upper right hand corner of the pic you can see several hens gathered around a chick waterer. I had removed the waterer from my broody's crate with the intention of cleaning and refilling it. With several outside waterers all around the hens just had to drink out of that little waterer because it's different.
