My Turkey has fly eggs in the folds of his neck help please

I need some ideas please. My Turkey gets these sinus problems all the time. He has been having a bad one so I have been watching him and I noticed that the nice red folds of his neck we black (dont worry not black head) so I had a vet appt for his sinus today and showed to him and he pulled the folds of the skin back and there were worms (maggots) in there so he cleaned them out. He told me that I needed to keep him in a house with no flys - I kind of half laughed and he said well then keep a house dark that would do it. All the way home I was thinking where on earth can I put him and I just dont have anywhere. So I have him on my back deck which get no sun to speak of and no other birds or anything live there so the flys are not better plentiful.

What I wanted some thought on was is there anything maybe I can put on his neck to help keep they flys away. I was trying to think of things I put on my horses but that would be too harsh. Does anyone out there have any ideas, I wish I had a house to put him in but with the heat I cant just close him up he would die from the heat even with a fan.

You could try dusting him with DE, paying special attention to his neck and the folds of skin.

I don't know if it is safe for turkeys but I am sure you could find out from the website- It is made by farnum and is called SWAT I use it on my dogs and horses. It is gentle and in a paste form so you can get it on them with out getting it in the eyes. It seems to last for several days and works very well for keeping flies off wounds and badly infested skin with out stinging. I would just check the farnum website for product info first.

The Sinus problem is making me crazy. I have had him to the vet 5 times over the last couple of years. We have drained, antibiotic and various and sundry things. Sent the mucus from the sinus to the lab twice which showed nothing. Turkey Two would seem to get better and the in 3 months he would start again. So this time we are doing the more expensive blood test I hope in 7 to 10 days to know what type of problem it is so I can consistanty treat it rather than the expensive vet trips. So thats where we are with than. The popular belief is it may be an alergey. Who knows! Terri

MandyH - The Turkey smells - I thought that was just how Turkeys smell but now I dont know.

My brother had found and taken in a ferral kitten a few years back with this problem. The vet called it bot-fly and it needs attention. If possible clean it out well and antibiotics will be needed to kill all of it. Maybe you could search for bot fly
