My Turkey has fly eggs in the folds of his neck help please

I put on an old cloth garden glove and spray down the palm with Adams tick and Flea spray, then I just lightly daub their heads/caruncles with my gloved hand (keeps the Deer flies from torturing the toms).
Please post up shot of tom, if possible. Will be interested in learning lab results.

What/where, specifically, is the source of the `smell'/odor?

um, jersey, it isnt bot fly, bot fly larvae are imbedded in the skin and he clearly stated in the first post that the VET removed the maggots, as in black soldier fly or house fly maggots, that were in the skin folds, not actually in the skin, the vet has taken care of his maggot problems he needs to know what to do to keep the flys off.

My advice is the same as a few others, your two best options are sevins dust, which can be found at Lowes fairly cheap in a can for dusting, just make sure it is the gardening kind, that way you know it is food grade, we use it on our birds for mites. Option number two is Diotomacious Earth or D.E. it is great. It could also help you with your fly issues, I use it in my outdoor trash can, sprinkle it in muddy areas to help keep smells down and duct some of the pens with it when there arent birds in them, it wont hurt the birds at all it is just very dusty and you dont want them inhaling large amounts or getting it in their eyes, it is recommended that you use a dust mask with both sevins and DE and you should also use eye protection, you do NOT want that dust in your eyes! Trust me.... I know..... I learned the hard way.... no fun at all. Any who, good luck with Mr. Turkey Two, hope he feels better soon.

Thought I would update my post. My Turkeys condition is a little better, the vet got back the blood test and all it showed was a blood born parasite (I think thats what he said) but nothing that would need any attention so basically we dont know anymore that 2 years ago. He put him on Baytril and something I cannot remember what it was, its in a red capsule and the powder inside is like paprika Red. I have been using those for almost 2 weeks with some imporvement, just today he is putting him on a more Broad Spectrum Antibiotic, its a powder that I will put in his water so we will see what this does. Havent seen anything more of the maggots so that is good. Thanks for your support. If I find out anything more I will post it. Terri

Sorry I didnt realize there was a page 2 so I didnt see all the post.

Ivan3 - I think the source of the smell was all the mucus, I mean he has tons of the coming out of him nose, eyes and who knows. The mucus getting into the folds of his skin caused sores and that how the fly larva got in there. So on the weekends I give his head a good bath with alittle water and Dawn detergent and get down in those folds.

I also moved the Turkeys to the backyard where there arent many flys because no one lives there. They get to roost on ly deck (I am so excited about that)!

MISRED871 - I decided to dust with the DE mainly because al already had a big bag of it and that sees to work.

Again thats for all your comments I will keep you posted.

Thanks Terri

PS - I will try and get some pics.

I don't know if this sounds crazy for a turkey or not.. but I use either A&D or petroleum jelly on the wounds of my horses to keep flies out of it. Much better than a bandage and flies and bugs can't get thru it. Both are safe on horses if they lick it or eat it. If it's on your turkey's neck.. he couldn't reach the A&D could he?

My turkey got really sick last week and have been nursing him back with Baytril too. We're on day 14 and he is doing MUCH better! He was weak, floppy, and had loose runny poop. The vet thinks it was likely from the heat and he stayed at the vet for 3 days getting tube fed since he couldn't stand and refused to eat/drink. But who knows what really happened. I didn't run blood work, just took my chances with the antibiotic and giving him electrolytes. Anyway, if you are worried about pesticides, might want to try the A&D rubbed on his neck.

ETA: oh! and my vet said to keep my turkey inside until the heat wave breaks and I went out and bought a large wire dog kennel and am keeping him in my living room in the kennel. It's not fun, but it's temporary.

Hey Hawkeye95 you sound like me Turkeys in the living room, had a goat in a bed room once and several chickens and ducks in the bathtub.

Does the AD&D collect dirt on it? I had a big bag of DE so I have been using that so far so good. I didnt want to do the blood test because of the expense but after fighting this on and off for 2 years or so it just seemed to make sense to try and find out what was or was not causing it. Now at least my vet knows what to try to clear each attack up without me having to take him in. The vet is changing his antibotic to a more broad range one that will go in his water. I am hopeful that will clear it up. Then each time he has an attach I can call the vet and just order the meds and thats it.

I am hoping.

Yeah, by the end of the day, my horses do rub off some of the A&D and some dirt gets in the top layer of jelly. But under the mess, the wound is beautiful, clean and heals nicely. I just clean it out at the end of the day and re-apply A&D again. Even if it gets dirty- bugs and dirt can't get through it. When you wipe it off, the skin underneath is usually healthy and looking great. (for wounds, I put Neosporin on first and then put the A&D on top of that) It's cheap if you buy the Walmart brand A&D- they call it Vitamin A&D and is half the price of the name brand! My turkey is finally out of my living room! Whew! She's under the deck in the shade with a mister blowing on her to keep her cool. I'm changing her feed and water often to keep her healthy. Hopefully when this heat wave breaks, she'll be in good condition. Good luck with your turkey! I hope the antibiotics work for you!
