My ups and downs so far with the chicks...

Unfortunately, all my research and preparation has still not yielded very good results.

We were shipped 28 chicks on April 30. We are now down to 19 living.

The first 6 died within the first 36 hours. 3 of those were Dominique bantams. I attribute these deaths on shipping stress or just not quite being healthy right from the start. After this period, we had a few good days.

Then one night I noticed 2 more of the doms with huge crops. I separated them overnight without food and they did not go down very much. That same day, one of the buff orp bantams that had been getting weaker and weaker passed away. I attempted the various remedies for impacted crop or sour crop depending on how they were feeling. I ended up doing crop surgery on one, but it did not survive. I found shavings packed in its crop. The other one died as well. This now had us with 5 out of the 7 dominques dead. We had theorized they were not as healthy of batch as the other breeds we got and this seemed to confirm it. I have 2 left. One is a bit smaller, but both seem to be holding their own.

Near this same time, I put in a trough style feeder and when I came back after a few hours, a silkie was limping. I assume it got hurt in the feeder somehow. I can find no injury or swelling. I had it with the two doms one day, but it was very lonely as in their sick condition, they were not any company. So, I put it back in with the others. It was happier, but it was getting run all over and it was too far to the food and water.

I was also dealing with a few pasty butt issues with some of the smaller buff orp bantams, so I moved three of them into a smaller box with the injured silkie. It's been easier to catch them to check frequently for pasty butt and the silkie seems content with the company now. I've been making sure they are all eating and drinking as much as they want and giving the silkie drench and poly-vi-sol. It stands some on its leg now and can hobble around, so it seems like maybe it was just a sprain and with rest, it will hopefully recover. I'll keep the four separated for a bit longer and hopefully reintroduce them back at the same time.

The main brooder holds 15 now. They are really discovering their wings. This morning I was watching and one jumped off a roosting bar and was only a few inches short of clearing the top of the box. I laid the bar over, so it was shorter. We have a larger, taller, brooder, but I was hoping not to set it up until we were ready to move them into the garage. I can put the lid on this one, but haven't figure out how to do the light with it, so I might just be taping up more cardboard on the sides to add some extra height. Not quite sure yet...

Here is a video of the main brooder taking Saturday night when they were 11 days old.

When it rains, it pours. I'll go ages with nothing more than an occasional case of pasty butt, then suddenly have a batch of chicks that just seems doomed from the start. In one batch of shipped chicks I had a whopping 40% mortality rate. I was refunded for them, of course, but wow, what a rough week it was!

Hopefully it will be some comfort to know that even experienced chicken keepers experience what you're going through right now. Every once in a while, there's a "bad" batch of chicks, and it's not because of any specific thing--it's just the luck of the draw.

Good luck with your remaining chicks!

Could they have consumed some of the bark off of that tree branch? What sort of tree is if from and is it fresh or old and peeling?

What is the pink stuff on the right side of the brooder?

Did the hatchery offer any warranty on the chicks?

They certainly look good now!

Wow! Even with a refund that is a hard loss to take. I had no idea they could have such high "out of the box" mortality.

No bark on that limb. It was an old oak limb with all the bark rubbed off. It is only now that they have really even started paying attention to it, so after the deaths.

The pink stuff is a feather boa that is now under the shavings. They liked to borrow under it at first. I shook off any loose feathers before putting it in there and never saw any mess with it much. I need to pull it out now I guess instead of just letting it get buried. They weren't on shavings for several days, so I know the shavings had nothing to do with the first 6 deaths. I'm pretty certain it contributed to the two with the crop problems. The other one had pasty butt problems every day and I had noticed that it had just failed to thrive.

I had a 24 hour warranty on having 25 living chicks (they put in 3 extra). At the 24 hour mark, I had 24 living, so I got a refund for one.

Yes, the others seem to really be growing and having a good time, so I think I have been taking care of them correctly. It's just hard sometimes not knowing why things went wrong and if there was anything I could have done.

Wow, that is high. I was expecting 10%, so 20% in the first 36 hours was a bit hard. I'm at about 32% now. I'm sorry for your loss, but it does make it easier when I hear of others having bad luck, too.

Thank you. I have 2 Dominique Bantams, 5 Silkies, 6 Buff Orpington Bantams, and 6 Easter Egger Bantams left.

Quote: It's highly atypical, but it does happen sometimes. I've had several orders of shipped chicks, and that's the only one I've received that went so poorly.

Typically, that's all the more you should expect to lose, but some times will be better and others will be worse. It can be stressful and disheartening when your chicks don't thrive, but no, you're not alone.

Hurt leg Silkie looks better each day.

Boiled an egg for them today. Didn't know if they needed grit for it or not, but I have been sprinkling a little on their food for a few days to slowly introduce it. At first I was met with resistance, but one one figured it out, they loved it. Lots of running around and chasing in the big brooder.

The hurt leg Silkie and smallest of the buff orps passed away today. The other two I had pulled with them went back in with the others today. I had already decided to move them tonight as they were doing well and I didn't want to hold them back. They're still a bit smaller than the others, but they seem strong.

what is pasty butt/ my white and black crested chick 6 days old. has some stuff all over his butt. I whipped it off. his fur looks like it got wet and dried to him. not sure how to clean that. any ideas
