It just depends on your dog and the time you have to spend with them. Its probably easiest and definately fastest to just secure the dogs better. However, dogs are very bright and can be taught with the right tools and patience. I have an alaskan malamute who killed a chicken years ago when we got our first flock. We spent time with her and were able to integrate the flock into her "pack". She is now a very watchful and effective free range flock protector. She has even chased off coyotes trying to get into the coop. overall just depends on what time you are willing to put into the situation! sorry for your loss though! Very sad.
