My very first egg ever!

First eggs report.

I was away for a week, increasingly frigid week in NM, and returned to find 3 eggs, the first from the five young hens i've had since late July. The eggs weren't from the 2 Ameraucanas, from whom I expect blue/green. The Buff Orpington is the likely producer of the light tan egg. The other two eggs were medium dark brown, one with tiny brownish-red speckles: could these be from the two Marans? I've suspected that one of them may actually be a Plymouth Barred Rock but I don't know if the difference in the brown eggs is relevant to confirming that. Any theories? Another speckled egg was laid today. Since it is too cold to range free in 6" of snow, perhaps the girls have decided to practice indoor skills.

I'm leaving the heat lamp on all night because we are expecting 7 degrees F.
