my very own micro farm

Yesterday was rather productive. Worked on some bad spots on the road and re dug a ditch through the adjacent pasture to redirect some run off from the storm. Dumped around 150 gals of water off the bigger kelso pen. I need to do something about the roof there. The tarp works but even with the slanted beams still catches and holds water, water that can eventually weigh alot and collapse the entire structure.
I also started leveling ground for the hoop coop finally, not that I don't have enough going on but I guess I had a free minute for that. All this by lunch and then the fun began. My friend came over to help me drop a tree.

That was alot of fun.
We went back to his house to paint some trim on one of his rooms after all that.
Upon my return home was when previously said peep was heard.
Has leftover pizza for dinner and made some more dough's to tuck in the freezer. Also made another batch of my jalepeno bread just before it was time to turn in.
This morning was greeted by cheeky ee chicks. The Misses was out just a bit before work checking on her and found a dead one. Appears to have just been smothered. Bummer. Only 5 eggs left to hatch with one looking like it was zipping, so counting the dead one that's 8 hatched. Im sure I'll get to see the other 4 at some point today.
Gonna move some wood and maybe get something together to put it in.
I also now have over 3 dozen promised eggs sold each week. With the intermittent sales of other dozens food cost should be mostly covered if not completely.

Alot to do today.

We live on one acre and have five chickens - 4 hens and a rooster. Can't have any broody birds because can't have more; but sure like to read about them and see pictures of them. Last year our tomatoes grew huge plants but hardly got any tomatoes, don't know why. Plan to try again this year.

Lots of green growth and not much fruit is a sign of high nitrogen levels and not enough phosphorus. Did you put lots of fresh manure in the soil? That would create that issue. Don't give up!

Not sure what I did, but I wrote down your advise and plan to use it this year. Thanks!

Attimus, you sure know how to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Good job. Ever get your gate on your duck pond fence? Was hoping for an update on that (and a pic), and can't wait for pics of your new chicks, so cute. Yeah, I know there are only so many hours in a day. lol Plan to try those onions that you planted last year. Looks like you just scattered them in there and added dirt ... didn't have to plant them upright?

gate is still in the works, have the hardware but not the lumber. I'll definitely be posting when it goes up. The first box of onions is doing well and I plan on using them continually throughout summer, just cut the tops off and leave em in the be ground. Started a second box. Golittle spread dirt over the first layer today. Yes I just spread em out. I got to hung up on poking holes and "planting" them they never had a chance to really take off. The plants know which way is up and will work it out. If not there are 100s on top of it.

Spent yesterday moving wood and building a little frame to cover it. Used that second cattle panel I had lying around along with a couple tposts and pallets, pics when it's finished, I might need to rearrange tarps to get one on it that fits evenly.

Chicks are out and running around with momma

She's been off the nest and last few eggs for awhile now. I imagine what's hatched has hatched. I removed another smothered one this morning, presumably not strong enough to get out from under her like the other. 3 eggs uncracked and one that just couldn't make it out of the membrane. So 7/13 for a first time broody isn't bad. I'll check the unhatched eggs for development in a bit, when I have a moment.

only caught a glimpse of this while I was at work. Looks great, I love fresh veggies. Always joke about eating most things raw the same as an apple, even potatoes. I was a sucker for a raw potato as a kid and could probably still eat one now. Is that sweet chili sauce in the middle? That's some Good stuff, used it in one of the chefs specials we ran at work.

I spare the ziplock bag of egg considering the food posted previously, but I did an eggtopsy on the 3 remaining eggs. All scrambled, zero development.

Took eggs to my neighbor today that had been asking about them, I think we are going to trade eggs for olive trees instead of cash. She's got about a half dozen Missions' that are 5 yrs old and maybe 10 asst. Unlabeled that grow shorter around 3 years old. Gonna be a lot of eggs to trade but I'm gonna try for as many as I can starting with the 5 year old ones. We'll see what I end up getting.

been in and around the asian culture for over ten years....it (the hmong) culture is very different then the american culture for sure....could go on for days about the stories and what i have went thru with them and their culture...we (american) have priests in the hmong culture they have a shaman...truly a different everything. would love to share about the spirits and such.

the sauce you can buy at a regular asian store for egg rolls...we watered it down to make a salad dressing and it tasted great...very yummy....sweetened chili sauce for spring rolls....its different from the sweet chili sauce for chicken.... its made from the pantai norasingh brand. its made in thailand....the spring rolls that you get from the restaurants are different from spring rolls from the hmong people....the spring rolls in the restaurants are deep fried and the spring rolls from the hmong people are spring rolls "called fresh rolls" and they are a rice sheet that is soaked in hot water until it moistens up and then wrapped like an egg roll....cilanto, rice noodle, sliced cucumber, shaved carrot, and either seasoned pork, or shrimp or both.....so it is super fresh for sure and then it is made with a peanut sauce that is so good....ahhhh...making me so hungry just for the sauce i might have to get busy....lol.....
