she was finishing up the 4 th chick all dead! She pecked at there face and back. She's has been broody 2 x and never hurt her babies. In fact she was way over protective ! They were all black chicks this batch was yellow. I've heard sometimes they think they are not there's ? I don't know..... I was livid she will never set again! So I pulled all the eggs from the other broody and the two she had left and put in bator. 4 have hatched two to go. Yes, I definitely need to get on the serama thread. I've been saving her eggs incase anyone wants those too. I'm way behind on the thread ! Have some catching up to do. Hope all is well with everyone. Here's the two that hatched about two days ago.

can anyone explain why she would do that? They were healthy. Definitely don't want to open a coop to that scene again !!

Oh no, that's horrible Angie. Not sure what would cause her to do that.

man that really sucks both about being locked out and your hen going cannibal. I could see my gamebirds doing that, they can be fickle. Medusa as a matter of fact is no longer aloud to hatch eggs because of how aggressive she got with me. Depending on how this hatch I have going now goes I'll be wanting some eggs once I clean the incubator out. Certainly don't want to get ahead of myself ;)

Thought of Qbert today: Making a raised bed garden and needed to remove this stump first. Teasing DH and asked him why he made a crater in the yard ... he asked me what I wanted and I told him a duck pond .... and he said "oh yeah, for Qbert" LOL So guess he remembers the stories I told him about your duck.

Did get the raised bed in and planted. Tired as we just made and planted another one yesterday. Thankfully it is supposed to rain the next 2 days and we can get a break from the yard ... but happy with how it is coming along.

this had me rolling today. Thankyou. Qbert is doing great free ranging with the mallards. Even looks to be taking a liking to the ducklings. She's still the only one who harasses us incessantly while we are outside. I've held the door for her a few times while she's on tthings step, won't come in. Lol. Growin' up. Have a bunch of broody hens that are going to be put in breakers tomorrow after brunch. They need to get back to work laying. Supply and demand and all that. Probably put s few eggs under em if I didn't have the incubator running. I need more of me running around. Or atleast a few extra pairs of hands. Always something to craft and I'm always wishing I had more hours to do things. Built this today before work.

Needed to take a break from digging for a minute. Also pulled the weedeater out and am getting ready to start on that. Ill give it a test start tomorrow, hoping nothing is broken. Ttfn. Getting up early. Onwards and upwards Attimus

Morning atts. Have a great brunch today, hopefully the day will give you extra hours!
yesterday was a long day. I didn't get anything done after work except for food. I'm gonna check on the broodies in a few and see who is going in first. Didn't get gas for the weedeater, need to do that this morning. Played a game of disc yesterday and had to wade through waist high grass half the time. Made it a little hard to find the frisbees too.
It's my weekend now so I'll have the available time to get some things done.

Chicks are still doing about the same. The buff one is looks a little better off than the black. Still not sure what's wrong with them. They just seem cold all day, spending most of their time near the hatch. Keeping clean food and water for them with the nutridrench. Changing the bedding etc.

Incubator is still running strong with naught but a degree of fluctuation. Still adding water to my sponge by hand on the upcycle and bumping the temp up momentarily while I do it. There's obviously going to be some fine tuning to the incubator after this hatch.

Progress since this morning.
Got gas for the weedeater. Tried to start it. Leaking fuel filter assembly. Picked up part and replaced. Ran two tanks of gas so far and reclaimed my dogs run and lower front driveway. Warming up a bit so switching gears til this afternoon when I cut down some more overgrowth.
Got the broody breaker set up and hen placed within. Now I just need to deal with the other 4. Lol.
The Misses brought the chicks out from the porch. They are still about the same. Little black one is a bit more active outside than the buff.
Found where one of the mallards is nesting and it's atleast still on the property though in the corner of the pasture on the other side of the road.
While I was walking back down the easement I hear the roosters light up and look up to see qbert taking of midflight down around the house's and there's a brief minute where I think 'man, she's gone' just as she came to a landing back in the driveway roughly where she had taken off from.

So is Qbert just learning to fly or has she been doing that for a while now? Sounded like a "test run" ... surprised they aren't spending most of their time around the pond, but I've never had ducks.

been flying for a while but had been having trouble getting up on the porch shelf prior to being released to the pond. Haven't seen her fly since we let her out, not to say it hasn't happened before. My little shoulder duckling is growing up. Still likes to bug the heck outta me. Nibbling at my hands the whole time I was working on the weedeater.

So my best assement of the chicks on the porch is cocci. All the symptoms seem to lean this direction. They're diet is improving and both feel to have good crops. The Misses might be picking up corrid today. Not thrilled bit if she wants it. I'm continuing with the nutridrench and clean feed and bedding. I hear vit b is good for this and the nd is chalk full of it with plenty of other beneficial nutrients. Just need to help them through it. As long as they are eating and drinking they should pull through.
In theory anyways.
