To save that kind of money, I'd take the hour drive & 45 minute Ferry ride.
1 hour there, 1 hour back, 45 minutes each way on the ferry = 3.5 hours.
Even if you had to go there & back the next day to pick puppy up, that would be 7 hours of travel time. Not sure how much the ferry costs, though. Either way, 1 hour drive = about 2 gallons of gas in many cars, so 4 total. That would be $12 in gas.
So, $350 saved on the vet bill - $10 in gas = $340 saved (not including the ferry - I have no clue how much that is). For the sake of argument, let's say $40 each way. That would be $80 total.
$340-80 = 260. 260/7 hours = $37 NET (after taxes) savings per hour of travel time. Definitely worth it!
I would have done it but I found out AFTER I got my puppy spayed.
The Ferry cost is approx $30 one way, you don't pay to get off the smaller Island.
We don't have the animal rights people to thank for our Vet fees increase but the Vets themselves. Also the area has become a popular place to live. High income/property tax area. I don't have a high income and I am a pioneer of the area
basically being forced out of my roots by those who move here that have lots of money. Anyway thats another story
The Vets have successfully made animal care a monopoly despite many petitions signed by unhappy pet owners. If they have the monopoly then they have the freedom to charge what they wish. The Vet Board here, states they can charge what the public will bear.
It seems they think that pet owners can't make a informed decision on their own. We no longer have the right to choose a alternative health care person, chiro, massage, certified dentist, etc without a OK from a Vet. We are not allowed to purchase certain meds from over the counter, they must be bought from a Vet.
I agree that some pet owners can't make or choose not to make, a wise decision but it would appear there are more rules regarding the health, care and treatment of pets than children these days.
