My vet is bleeding me dry!!!

There was just an article in The Oregonian paper yesterday about large animal vets, and how less than 4% of the students are Oregon State Vet School are large / food animal focused. Yet, with the decline in large animal vets, as the "good ol' boys" retire, the young vets can't seem to find jobs either! Go figure...

To save that kind of money, I'd take the hour drive & 45 minute Ferry ride.

1 hour there, 1 hour back, 45 minutes each way on the ferry = 3.5 hours.

Even if you had to go there & back the next day to pick puppy up, that would be 7 hours of travel time. Not sure how much the ferry costs, though. Either way, 1 hour drive = about 2 gallons of gas in many cars, so 4 total. That would be $12 in gas.

So, $350 saved on the vet bill - $10 in gas = $340 saved (not including the ferry - I have no clue how much that is). For the sake of argument, let's say $40 each way. That would be $80 total.

$340-80 = 260. 260/7 hours = $37 NET (after taxes) savings per hour of travel time. Definitely worth it!

I used to work for a vet and I havent read all the previous posts but as to the heartworm yearly test, that was changed this year by the powers that be<whoever decided that> because people would get a refill and it had been years since thier dog got checked. Just making sure no slip ups as sometimes people forget to give the pill on time and that small time span can put the dog at risk. If you give the dog its prevention and its contracted heartworms, it can actually do more damage to the dogs heart.

I no longer work for a vet and get my supplies from petsuppliesnet.com. Its half the price that you'd pay at the vets. They have hearguard, revolution, comfortis, frontline, advantage to name a few. It only costs 5.00 shipping and handling no matter how much you buy. And, you dont need a prescription.

I would have done it but I found out AFTER I got my puppy spayed.

The Ferry cost is approx $30 one way, you don't pay to get off the smaller Island.

We don't have the animal rights people to thank for our Vet fees increase but the Vets themselves. Also the area has become a popular place to live. High income/property tax area. I don't have a high income and I am a pioneer of the area

basically being forced out of my roots by those who move here that have lots of money. Anyway thats another story

The Vets have successfully made animal care a monopoly despite many petitions signed by unhappy pet owners. If they have the monopoly then they have the freedom to charge what they wish. The Vet Board here, states they can charge what the public will bear.
It seems they think that pet owners can't make a informed decision on their own. We no longer have the right to choose a alternative health care person, chiro, massage, certified dentist, etc without a OK from a Vet. We are not allowed to purchase certain meds from over the counter, they must be bought from a Vet.
I agree that some pet owners can't make or choose not to make, a wise decision but it would appear there are more rules regarding the health, care and treatment of pets than children these days.

Your not referring by any chance to the vet on Broadway are you?

I used to work at that one for several years.

I was told that there has only been like TWO cases of heartworm in San diego in the last ten years anyway... I never have and never will give my dogs heartworm meds while living here. Why put poison into their bodies that they don't really need anyway.

Now fleas, that's a different story.

i went today to my vet and asked for an rx for my dog's heartworm med which is iverhart max. as i can get it from kv supply(on line) for 20.95 for 6 months or 19.95 x2 for 12 months and the vet charges me 38.50 for a 6 month supply. they refused to give me the rx to buy elsewhere. i live in ga., anyone know if vet can refuse to give you an rx for the med. they have ordered so that you can not chose where you buy????

Yes they can refuse anything they want. Are your dogs UTD on all their shots from them? Did your vet do the heartworm test on them? (my vet wont perscribe the meds without a heartworm test being done on them..)
That may be why they wont give you a script..until you bring the dogs in to them...
Which defeats the purpose of trying to save money...

my dog is up to date on shots and in heartworm testing by this vet....they would not give me an rx to buy elsewhere, yet sold me the iverhart for 38.00 from their office.

That's annoying! The whole point is getting the best care you possibly can for the animals in your care... if they make it impossible to afford then people will either just not take them to the vet or they'll dump them (hopefully in a shelter but we know that's not always the case)... what's the POINT... I mean, if you've dedicated your life (or at least career) to caring for animals... what's the point in sabotaging these poor creatures?
