To answer the question; Fireworks started it, but the local government's inability to effectively coordinate with federal agencies to put it out when it was small let it get really really big. It burned all night and into the morning, covering the mountain and lighting up the whole sky. The most amazing part was the fire retardant bombers (giant former war planes that drop fire-stopping chemicals) that were buzzing downtown the next morning to keep the fire from going into a historical residential neighborhood. Unreal.

I'll be keeping a close watch on this board for suggestions for coping with chickens and wildfire smoke when July rolls around. You can't understand it unless you live in the West when the fires get started- it is unbelievable sometimes.

Oh yeah, and earthy-chick, I envy those rhododendrons big time.
