In the morning when my head is screwed on straight i'll try and explain things better. From what i understand the appearance of the abacot ranger is identical (phenotype) to the U.S. silver phase welsh harlequin (blue speculum) but is genotypically different. I was involved partially in a thread about this earlier this year and learned a few things, i'm just going to have to dig it out somehow and re-view.



Looked the genotype up in holderreads book, which i highly recommend getting if your are going to raise Harlequins as not only does it give excellent info but Dave also wrote the APA standard on them.

Thanks, KansasKid. I have the latest edition so I will read up on it tomorrow. I agree that it's a must for breeders - and well worth getting even if you already have the earlier edition.
Edit: yes, our standard WH are like your Gold W Harlequins (with recessive brown - notated as Brsl(br) by Holderread). Your Silver W Harlequins are like our Abacot Rangers (minus recessive brown). Holderread also talks about golds and silvers as having the sooty gene. I'm not sure if the sooty gene is present here. I'd not come across it till reading this book. It makes sense that there are many modifying genes like that which are little known or totally unknown.

I am going to extend an invitation. The veterinary college at Oregon State University at Corvallis Oregon has a poultry division. They also specialize in llamas and alpacas, dairy cattle, and horses. There is an excellent small animal division. Since the school is an agricultural college the students are down to earth and friendly. All the people at the vet college are nice.

Corvallis is a beautiful area and there is a poultry community of super nice people. Keep those grades up, get accepted to OSU, and I will get you hooked up with them when you get here.

Corvallis is fantastic. If I moved back to Oregon it would be to Corvallis. I regret that when I lived in Salem I was stuck in apartment life and unable to take advantage of all the pleasures of rural life including poultry. I'm so Oregonian I have webbed toes.
