My young rooster just killed one of the hens

I agree whole heartedly. And thanks everyone, for the condolences . I swear, one more bad thing and I'm going to have to take a break!

I had a Cuckoo Maran roo try and kill a young hen, but my husband was able to rescue it and I nursed it back to health. From then on the roo tried attacking me and my husband whenever we went into the coop or chicken yard. The last straw came when my husband was collecting eggs and the roo jumped on his back and tried to spur him. My husband kicked him, grabbed him, then threw him out in the far field thinking the coyotes would get him, but he found his way home in 3 days. That's when the shotgun came out and he was no more.

Jenmenke, what has happened to your rooster? Curious what you decided to do with him.

I've had a rooster that TRIED to kill a pullet before. He didn't get to try again. Best chicken and dumplings I ever made....

This happened right now in front of my eyes. I have separated the "friendly, kind, gentle (about 3 years old)" rooster and the older hens for one year. Separate coops for sleeping. Separated from the two, one- year -old hens, of which, one of the older girls did not like. They free range on 35 acres in separate groups. Two- one year hens in one group and the other group, rooster, two- three year old hens and one of the one- year- old hens that the group accepted as one of their own. I noticed fussing this morning between the girls in the two groups after I opened their pens. So i kept an eye on them. Quickly, the rooster starts chasing one of the one- year -old hens(from the other group) and i thought he was trying to mate. I didnt have a good feeling because he seemed so relentless, so i quickly followed to catch him standing on her head behind some shrubbery next to the pen. Done. Gone. That fast. So i found the other one- year- old hen who was her friend and promptly placed her back in her pen alone and protected from him and the mean girl. What to do next?

I have a very similar situation to yours and want to prevent any further attacks. Did you get replies? What did you do to solve your problem?
