My youngsters are not laying to capacity

Last April we bought 2 dozen chicks (6 different breeds) and had a light on in their coop over the winter. They laid great during the winter and early spring (14 - 16 a day out of 24 hens) but have really slowed downed now (8 - 12). We're they too young to lay so early, or do we need to supplement their food?

Having laid all winter they are now taking a break. They will start up again - may even go through a molt.

Are you experiencing sudden temperature spikes? That will increase their stress and they'll slow down eating.

I had light for my pullets last year...and they are all still laying pretty well.

What are you feeding?
Yes, the heat can slow them down.

Do you free range?
They may be laying out in their rage area.

We live in the pacific NW that has a moderate temperature range. I feed the girls an organic feed that is milled locally. The chicks are I an 80X100 foot fenced and covered area. We were suspicious that they were laying elsewhere but have searched the yard numerous times. It's still a mystery. I'm hoping that they will pick up their production soon
