Well, it is an official nightmare! I have some 4 month chickens that have had runny eyes and/or crusted shut (milky white drainage), some coughing/sneezing, lethargic, decreased appetite, even a coupe of deaths. Took the worst one who was "gasping" for air to the local vet. He made some calls and had an idea it might be MG. I took the chicken to Raleigh the next day to the Department of Agriculture Diagonistic Labrotories. They tested her and then did a necropsy. It's a clear case of MG :( That means my farm of almost 100 birds is now on quarantine.

I'm treating all of them with Duramycin/Tetracycline. My questions are never-ending at this point. Where do I go from here? Has anyone had any experience with this and if so, what did you do? Should I treat them or put them down? I sell a lot of biddies to fund my love of chickens. I could end up with carriers of the MG even after they are treated with the antibiotics. The disease could be passed through the eggs. WHAT DO I DO? Any advice from "survivors" of this nightmare would be appreciated!!

There is a young man on BYC named Farmerboy16... He has a thread... Its all about his dealing with MG. He may be able to help you with some things to do.

The chickens could be culled for meat. Collect eggs from your best ones, dip them in the solution that Farmerboy16 tried, and the eggs came back from testing and tested negative... SO he know's it works. Anyway... here is the thread

Check it out and good luck!

Cull and start over. I was in your same position. You can't kill mycoplasma g with anything. It is even going to take a month for it to die off in the environment. It's not worth trying the "cures" nothing works and we have tried it all. I didn't want to cull, I even paid for a surgery to fix a turkeys wing- that's how much I care. Don't waste your time. Avoid auctions and other peoples farms and order from a certified hatchery. Good luck
