My daughter started 4-H for the first time this year and we are total chicken noobs. We are enjoying ourselves immensely as we learn. However, Fair is coming up and we need to decide what chicken to show (not that we actually care if we win, the chickens are their own reward). We kind of got an assortment of bantams when we first got the chicks (another long story in itself), so we have one that we are utterly confounded as to what it is.

I have scoured online and through the Standard and I can't find anything definitive. Please help if you can.

This is D'argo, our mystery chicken, she is about 20 weeks old (note, the "she" is an assumption based on general plumage and demeanor from my years of experience with non-chicken birds), all our chickens were hatched in Mid-January.

We also have Wilson, same age, same assumptions on sex. I'm told she is an Americauna (?). Sadly there is a greenish tinge to her legs which apparently disqualifies her from being shown, but I just wanted confirmation on the breed since she is such an awesome (and gorgeous) chicken that we'd like to do more of her.

I have links to the *full* size pictures (this are scaled down to about 17% of full size) available if anyone wants a closer look.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Augh! I've seen people asking about that top bird before and I've seen their breed name before (and googled it to see what it looked like) but cant remember what it is! So sorry. They're very pretty though!

The top bird is a Mille fleur Old english game bantam. Argh! I've wanted one for so long, so bad! Lucky you!

The second looks the be an EE. Cute little pullet.

Thanks for the assistance. With something specific to look for I was able to locate the right description in the standard.

For a book that costs $60, you'd think they could afford to have someone go through and check the page references. The description in the bantam section sent me to a page full of pictures that have no relation to the Millie Fleur coloring. I kept flipping through to find Millie Fleur in another breed which referred me to a page that was just a list of breeds in another class, but 20 pages further along I finally found the description. Argh, no wonder I couldn't find anything useful before.

So much to learn. Thanks again.

Do you have the Bantam Standard, or The Standard of Perfection?

Oh, sheesh! Just realized how many posts you have!

So glad to have you!

Thanks for the welcome. I have been lurking a while.

I have The Standard of Perfection, the most recent printing, 2010 I think. It's what they 4-H people said was used. It has lots of information, but really could stand a thorough editing and maybe a little updating in format from the lingering late 19th century influence. (at the very least a more comprehensive index would help)
