mystery chick with mouth open

I found a chick on the road (actually my dog did) while walking and I couldn't see a nest so i picked it up and it is now in a box with a towel and heating pad on low. It started opening its mouth so I dont know if it's panting or hungry. I have no idea what kind of bird it is so I dont know what to feed it either. It is black/grey with very long legs. Any help would be greatly appreiciated!

Pet Smart sells baby bird formula, about how long are the legs and it is hungry

About two inches. I live on brackish water with a bird sancutary near by so there are tons and tons of birds here.

I am no expert but try feeding tiny pieces of earth worm until you get baby bird formula or find a better solution

I read some were that you can feed them plain apple sauce

baby bird formula is the best thing you could feed it, you did the right thing by putting it on a heating pad on low wrapped in a towel and if you don't get the formula make sure to put a tiny bit of water in with whatever you feed it

that should not hurt it
