Mystery chick....?

I read that when Splash Cochin chicks hatch, they are almost all white. This chick's rump is white. But I think that the yellow/gold comes from the Buff Orp hen.

I also forgot to mention... We didn't actually get to see this mystery chick hatch. When we found it, the only egg shell in the nest was the darker one, and it looked like the chick had hatched from that(since no other chick had hatched yet, and it was the only egg shell remains in the nest). So we assumed that since no other chicks had hatched yet, and since there weren't any other egg shell remains, she must have hatched out of that egg. One of the Red Star/RIR chicks hatched out of a lighter egg(we watched it hatch).

I guess we will wait and see.

Well.....if the buff was carrying dominant white it could be from a buff cross splash.
I think te chick wouldn't be splash because a buff would most likely be pure for the non blue gene. Spash is pure for the blue gene. One of each gene from each parent gives a blue bird....not a splash.

However, sometimes buff orps carry dominant white to turn smut in flights to white. Thus if the buff had a dominant white gene & this gene was inherited by the it would turn the blue to white, most likely with flecks of blue looking like a splash. If that happened it might look like a slash but it wouldn't be a splash; it would be split for domint white.

On the other hand dominant white can have been inherited from a RSL. What was the male of the other cross?

The other two chicks that hatched are from: Red Star hens and 1 Rhode Island Red rooster.

Are the red stars orange or red with a white tail & flights?

If so, considering that the Red Star, as a commercial hybrid, is a cross breed in itself. From Red Star X RIR, I'd give a rough estimate that chicks might be something like yellow with an orange cast or orange. Feathering up red/orange with either black or white flights & tail.

From BO (carrying dominant white) X Splash, if the offspring inherited the dominant white, I'd expect the chicks to hatch yellow with a few dark spots & possibly orange on head but probably not on the rest of the body.

The one that you explained about the BO(carrying dominant white) and Splash matches what our chick looks like, except she doesn't really have any dark spots.

But maybe that's because she's so young and her feathers have not grown in yet, which means that her true colors aren't showing yet. Just like with black Ameruacanas, they may be black/brown mixed colors as chicks, but then their feathers change and they are black when they are older.

So to be truly sure if she is indeed from our Buff Orp and Splash Cochin, we will just have to wait and see what her feathers turn out to be.
