Hi all, I posted about this little one before, but now I have pics. This is a 4 week old chick, I think it is my mystery chick from Mcmurray because I have identified all the others for the most part. It looks a lot like the barred rocks I have but with shorter wings and tail, which makes me think rooster according to some things I have seen on the forum. It may be a little too early to tell as the comb and waddle aren't in yet. There are several other chicks in the "rare" category (which they mystery chick is a straight run "rare and exotic" chick) with that coloring. Let me know what you think. I really hope it is a hen, my husband (who has been very accommodating about all this chicken business) really doesn't want a rooster, and I don't want to give up one of my chickies!

Still on the log :)

Thanks!

I am new at this but I agree that it is a BR. It looks just like the 4 I have at home. From the black legs, the head spot and the lack of comb/wattles I would say it's a pullet. My little boy is only a week old and his comb is already twice as big as the girls. Also I have three girls and two have lots of wing and tail feathers but the other is a lot slower at growing hers. She isn't as slow as the little boy though. Good Luck! I hope I'm right that way you don't have to give one up, that would be sad.

The feather pattern/length is so different on this one from the other barred rocks though. The coloring is the same, but the wing feathers are shorter and the tail doesn't have that V shape. But the comb isn't big and I haven't seen a waddle coming up yet. I guess I will just have to wait.

Yes, Mcmurray has the Cuckoo Marans variety, it could be that as well. I suppose some pullets can just have shorter wings and tails depending on their breed and individual characteristics.
