Mystery Chicken

You might've been hearing a "bawk-bawk-boaaack" noise that hens make. You did have seven different people here agree that there were no boys based on the photos, so there shouldn't be anything "mystery" about her.

Thanks everyone! My two sweet girls seem to be pretty happy. Not quite happy enough to lay an egg yet, but I'm not going to rush them. They've been through a lot.

Haven't seen any sight or sound of MC. Yeah out of all the chicken people that have responded here and on my FB page, only one thought it was a roo. The majority rules. Well, wherever SHE has gone, I'm glad she's not here any more. I guess I know what 'flighty' means now.

Your 2 hens look like red sexlinks, the one the that ran off looks like a game hen. That's probly why she was more flighty than the others.

Farmerchef, Thank you for that observation. I still need someone to sit me down and explain that whole sex link thing to me. Is it simply that their sex is recognizable by their coloring? As for the game hen thing, that actually makes some sense. Some of the other chickens that were with them before I got this 3 are quite psycho, to the point of drawing blood to each other. Really sad, cause two of them were absolutely gorgeous roosters. Has made me think twice about getting a rooster at all.

That's pretty much unanimous. I guess MC is a hen, a goofy one. Now I know what flighty means.

Yep. They're a cross breed of two great laying breeds, a one time mix that makes boys one color and girls another. Cuts out those pesky unwanted roosters.

if you get a roo try and get a very young chick one that you can handle everyday a few times a day, depending on the amount of hens i would only have one roo. if you dont have enough hens for the amount of roos that you have there will be fighting and such over the hens. now i do have 2 roos together by themselves that i have no problems with (no hens with them eaither) but i am looking to get some hens for them.

This is a great post that I always reference about red and black sex links. Basically, in red sex links, roosters are white and hens are red. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=261208
