Last night when I got home from work I noticed my six month old Easter Egger hen was not free ranging with her flock. I search the yard and couldn’t find her, so figured she had been taken by a hawk. A couple hours later my husband found her by a bush very lethargic and not wanting to move but still alive. I isolated her in a dark safe place, and this morning she was dead. She had no signs of infection or labored breathing. She had laid an egg that day. It seemed to come on suddenly. There were no signs of injury that I could tell. Any idea what could’ve caused this? Is it safe to eat the egg she laid the same day she passed? Or should I throw it out?

The egg should be fine.

Only way you're gonna figure out the cause of death, is to either do a necropsy yourself, or send to a lab for a more detailed to the cause of death.
