Ha ha...My daughter and I were trying to decide who laid the eggs we got today and we can't figure it out! We have a small brown egg and no one in the coop that lays a small brown egg! I think one of my girls must be a mutt that looks an awful lot like a breed. All of these girls are feed store girls so I guess it could be. We have 4 Easter eggers (3 lay greenish/blue eggs and one lays huge brown eggs), then 1 Sumatra, 1 Spangled Hamburg, 1 Polish, 1 Mystery chicken, solid black with white face and earlobes, and 2 Leghorns. I should be getting mostly white eggs, right?? This is just too weird I think I might have to do some surveillance to figure this out. We thought the small brown egg was TurkeyLegs but then it was determined that she is a Sumatra and they lay white eggs. Things that make you go hmmm??

My guess would be that the EE that lays large brown eggs had a small egg that day.

It sounds like you might have a White faced black spanish. I have 3 hens and 2 lay white eggs, and one lays a light brown egg, It is kind of creamy looking. Maybe she is the one!?

Yeah, I'm suspicious of the mystery chicken, white faced spanish, or whatever. She clearly has white earlobes though, you'd think that means she lays a white egg but I'm thinking she must be a cross.

Older post but I think I've figured it out. Some resources list the possibility that Sumatras lay a tinted egg. I believe it must be her as it is a very light brown almost white except the Leghorns' eggs are so white you can tell it is "tinted". I think that is the answer. The white faced Spanish is a much larger hen so I'm pretty sure it is the Sumatra since the egg is small.
