Mystery killer

Agreed - skunks can and will kill your chickens. They dig for grubs in our yard and leave little holes all over. If we catch a skunk, we kill it. Skunks are a very prevalent carrier of rabies around here. They are also a nuisance animal. We also kill coons and possums that we catch.

Thanks everybody. It was our christmas morning so we let him/her go just this once. I didn't want to ruin a borrowed trap, and felt guilty killing a trapped animal. Haven't had a problem since! Not sure if being trapped with dogs running around scared it some! We put out ammonia soaked rags in areas we thought it may be nesting. We did have the talk though, that next time we're killing it somehow. Between the dogs and the birds (and rabies here too) I'm not into the high population of skunks around here.

Funny you mention possums, as we let one of those go a few months ago. Hm, and all this time I was blaming the raccoons!

Time to reset some traps, as the snow comes they'll be looking for dinner soon!

So sorry for your loss and best wishes.
I lost an 8-week old pullet on Christmas Eve, so I know how you feel. I don't want to kill the predators, but I do want to protect my flock.
So far, the possums haven't bothered my birds. I've had a great deal of problems with hawks and racoons this year, but there are owls, foxes, and coyotes in the area, too. I think (hope, pray) I've solved the predator problem now, but time will tell.
