I live in a somewhat residential area with neighbors but they don’t seem to mind. I have 10 lovely adult hens.

A couple of nights ago one of them was screaming bloody murder. Because of covid-19 my uni is closed and my sleeping schedule is pretty much non existent. So I was awake when I heard them screeching. I ran outside so fast with a flashlight and a pair of scissor (i dont know what I was thinking, like what am I gonna do with scissors??). I started yelling in my mother’s tongue so that my neighbors wouldn’t know that I was cussing at 2am, “why are you screaming?! It’s ass o’clock, y’all need to sleep.”

I thought it was a mouse that spooked them and that they were probably being overdramatic. So I check the perimeter just in case and yell out a few empty threats (in several languages) in case some crazy person was hiding and thinking of stealing my chickens because covid-19 made idiots panic buy and cause freaking EGG SHORTAGES. Irrelevant.

Two days pass by and everything’s normal. But then, last night, I was just chilling watching anime at 3am and then I hear the most blood curdling scream. My mom and I thought it sounded like a person was getting beat up but chicken version. I jumped down my stairs as fast as I could, and ran outside with nothing but a tiny flashlight. This time no scissors in hand.

I was scissorless.

Now, I’ve seen my girls hop like 3 feet max into the air but no cap I saw this bish jump at least 6 feet while screeching the ba-kwaks at the top of her tiny chicken lungs. My jaw nearly hit the floor.

And I could barely make out what it was but I saw the silhouette of a four legged animal climbing up one of the chicken run’s 7ft support beams and run away.

My poor girls were awfully frightened. All of them made it but some of their feathers were ripped out. No torn skin. But definitely traumatized. The poor babies didn’t want to go back inside of their own coop and just huddled by my dad’s legs even though it was raining and they were all soaked TT

I’m guessing it’s an opossum because I saw one chilling by my back door while I was studying about a month ago. But my dad thinks it’s more of a small feral cat. We plan on locking them inside the coop every night until we figure out what to do. I’ve never had any experience with predators before and I really don’t want to harm any animals regardless if it’s a predator. If y’all could give some suggestions we would greatly appreciate it!

Lock them in every night is the only way. Electric wires on the outside of the pen. Locking them in is the best optio.
The predator will be back if not tonight it will be when you let your guard down. If you relax or forget just one night the pred will be there.
good luck

I have several game cameras up around on my property. I was curious as to what was roaming around at night. I was surprised to see so many. Here it's mostly coyotes.

Sounds like a house cat, they are bad to kill chickens and leave , make sure you lock your roost up every night don't leave chickens out.

Your post cracked me up...your sense of humor is great!
Even tho it's still pure speculation(game cam is best bet).....
Seeing some pics of your cop and run would help.
So would knowing......
