Hello! I am new to raising quail and have some chicks that I am trying to identify- they are brown with white, but don't appear to be a white-winged pharaoh or tuxedo (the chest is completely speckled).

Here's the background, I was supposed to be getting jumbo brown coturnix, but I was (pleasantly) surprised when I saw what looked like a mix of brown and A&M hatch out in the incubator. It's been 3 weeks and out of the 31 brown, three of them have this unique coloring to their wings. It's like there are strips of white coming in, but they aren't white anywhere else. I have been researching and found a lot of "Brown. And White." quail, but not many "brown & white". Prior to this, I didn't think it was possible for a standard brown to have white because of the recessive genetics.

I know there are a lot of quail colors, does anyone know if this is typical?

Every breed has it's oddballs. Pieds and tuxes have white on them it could just be a not so well marked one. Might be interesting to breed her back to one of her siblings and see if you get more interesting markings. I love unique looking animals. I have three tuxes and they are all different, one is normal wild color with white markings, one is what I think is called Rosetta and the other is red.they are my breeders cause I love having quail I can tell apart, since they aren't food birds and I am not selling them I can name them.

Even our food gets names. I don't name until I learn the personality most of the time. If there is something really unique to it then there may be an exception. Since we have a rabbit that is a doe & spotted she got named Dotty while a stepped one was a buck with a racing strip down is back was named streak. Everyone else in the group is named by cage number & color for now & until they earn their name.

I'll quit side tracking your thread now Kennebee.
