My 10-wk old giant cochin has been afflicted with small flat red spots and dry flaky skin on her belly for >2 weeks with no signs of improvement. She's the only one out of three in my first ever flock exhibiting these symptoms and is otherwise acting normally-- eating, drinking, pooping, and behaving just like her flockmates. Only difference is she's the only one willing to sunbath under the searing Texas heat. Also, being the runt of the clutch, she's always been on the smaller and lighter side compared to the others.
I first noticed a tiny red spot near her vent and went digging under her thick fluffy feathers to find a larger area of red spots on her belly. Luckily, it appears to have not spread up to her chest or back. Initially, I gave her a bath with soap and water and monitored her condition for changes. A week later, I noticed some dry skin flaking off so I soaked her in warm Epsom salt water.
Their chicken coop was only built a month ago and has been cleaned regularly. No mites/lice were seen crawling on her skin or in the coop when I inspected her at 1 AM and took the pics attached.
Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Can it be treated? Thank you in advance for your help!
