A friend sent this picture of a frequent visitor to her backyard. She cannot get any closer. Sorry, there are no closeup pictures forthcoming. This is not super important -- just curiosity. I can identify it as a chicken, probably female. Judging from the stuff next to her, her back is about 3 bricks tall.

I know, the picture quality reminds me of a bigfoot sighting. But that's the best picture she's been able to get. The chicken scatters even when it sees my friend through the sliding glass door. I'm just going to email her back with all the suggestions and let her have fun researching and making her own guess. (It's still pretty locked down around here, so this really will be fun for her.)

I really appreciate the responses!

Looks nothing like an Orpington. Can your friend get better pics? Looks sort of gamey. Maybe gamefowl mix.

Leg color and comb type help.
I'm thinking gamey as well and would also explain her being skittish on letting the photographer get close.

Most breeds also come in multiple colors.

I think that color might be Wheaten, or else Black Tailed Buff. But of course it might not be, given that I can't really see the front end of the chicken.

When checking breeds, if your friend can get a look at the chicken's comb, that can be helpful. (Might need binoculars or a telescope!) Single combs are the most common, but if the chicken has any other kind of comb it can really help narrow down the breed possibilities.
